Haleigh Cummings is a 5-year-old girl from Satsuma, Florida, who went missing from her family’s trailer on the 10th February 2009.
Haleigh, along with her 4-year-old brother Ronald Jr, was staying at her father’s, Ronald Cummings, house the night she went missing. Ronald was out working a midnight shift as a crane operator. Ronald’s girlfriend, 17-year-old Misty Croslin, was looking after the children at home.
Misty’s recollection of events that night keeps changing. At first, she claimed that Haleigh slept in the big bed with her, but she then claimed that Haleigh was actually sleeping on a mattress on the floor just four feet away from the bed.
Misty said she went to sleep at around 10:00pm that night. The back door to the trailer was locked, and even Ronald himself said that it was very tricky for an adult to open, so there is no way a 5-year-old girl would have been able to open it.
Misty claims she woke up in the night to find the kitchen light on, and the back door being kept open by a cinder block. It was then she realised that Haleigh was missing.
Ronald Cummings had got custody of his two children because their mother, Crystal Sheffield, had a history of drug problems. Crystal also missed the custody hearing because Ronald lied to her about when the hearing was. Crystal was also unemployed at this time, which was used against her.
Police were informed about Haleigh’s disappearance, and they began to start searching the local area. To this day, investigators still believe that Misty did not tell them the whole truth about the night Haleigh went missing and that she is holding back vital information that could move the case forward and potentially find Haleigh.
Ronald and Misty got married not long after Haleigh’s disappearance. When questioned by a news presenter as to why he married Misty so soon after his daughter had gone missing, Ronald became defensive and essentially told the news presenter to “mind your own business.”
Ronald and Misty were involved in a world full of drug use and violence. It came as no surprise when both Ronald and Misty were arrested in January 2010, for drug trafficking.
Ronald was sentenced to 15 years in prison, which was a reduced sentence as he agreed to testify in all future cases involving the drug counts he was charged with, and the case of his missing daughter, Haleigh. He is due to be released in October 2022.
Misty was sentenced to 25 years in prison and is due to be released in January 2032. Since being arrested, Misty has not given any new information to the police regarding Haleigh’s disappearance.
As of 2021, Haleigh is still considered to be a missing person. Her paternal grandmother, Teresa, believes she is still alive. Speaking to News4Jax, she said: “There is nothing to tell me that she isn’t still alive.”
The former lead detective in Haleigh’s case said they have no evidence to suggest that she is dead and that they urge Misty to tell them the truth about what happened that night.
