Michael Wayne Dunahee

Michael Wayne Dunahee was born on the 12th May, 1986, in Victoria, British Colombia, Canada. His parents are Crystal and Bruce Dunahee.

On 24th March, 1991, Michael and his family went to Blanshard Elementary School for his mother, Crystal’s, flag-football practice. The family arrived around 12:30pm. When they arrived, Michael, who was 4 years old, asked his mum if he could to the playground – which was close to where the football practice was taking place. Despite Crystal having a gut feeling that “something wasn’t quite right”, she allowed Michael to walk over to the playground by himself. Crystal told Michael to “stay there and wait for Daddy to come” once he reached the playground, and figured that since there were other parents and children at the playground already, he would be safe for a few minutes.

Michael never reached the playground.

When Bruce, Michael’s dad, reached the playground, Michael was nowhere to be seen. His parents immediately notified the police, and around 50 people began searching for the 4 year old.

The police then began one of the largest searches in Canadian history, but they were never able to find any trace of Michael. Investigators believe that Michael never made it to the park, and was abducted just meters from his family. The case was marked as an abduction case, due to the public area in which Michael disappeared from.

Detectives interviewed sex offenders in the area, and any member of the public who was in the area at the time of the disappearance. The only information that came from this was that a witness in the area saw a “man in his late 40s or early 50s in a brown van near the playground.”

There have been a few sightings of Michael over the years, but none have ever been confirmed. Three men who thought they could be Michael have been ruled out with DNA testing.

In 2020, the user ‘shanger danger’ on TikTok reportedly found the T-shirt Michael was wearing the day he was abducted. After Michael’s family viewed the t-shirt, they confirmed that it was not the same t-shirt he was wearing.

As of 2021, Michael’s case is still open. Police believe that if they had current technology such as video CCTV, DNA testing and a digitalised computer system in 1991 the case would have been solved.

How could a child be abducted in a crowd of people without anyone seeing anything? In the 30 years Michael has been missing, how are there still no leads in the investigation? Will we ever find Michael, and will his family ever get the closure they deserve?
